Michel Tay: Finalist One – Noël Caleb Photography Contest 2012

As promised yesterday, here is the profile and portfolio of the first finalist of the Noël Caleb Photography Contest 2012 – Michel Tay.

Michel Tay is a Singapore-based fashion and commercial photographer. Photography has been his passion since his college days in the Lasalle College of Arts, where he studied communication design.

After college, he began work as a Digital Imaging Artist at a local photography studio, where he was introduced to the world of Fashion, Commercial and Still-Life photography.

In 2003, Michel became a full-fledged photographer and went on to build an impressive roster of shoots. He started his own company – Michel Tay Photography in 2008, which essentially focuses on Fashion and Commercial Photography while also dabbling in Still-Life and Wedding Photography.

Michel has garnered much local and regional acclaim in this span of time through his collaborations with international models, celebrities and the best brands.

Multi-talented Michel is an avid graphic designer  as well who beautifully bridges the worlds of photography and graphic design in his work.

But here’s the best part, he is also a popular local recording artist! He regularly performs in a band called Elyzia and has released several albums and compilations. Michel has also represented Singapore and performed overseas!

With an impressive portfolio that includes marquee names like SK-II, NIKE, Hewlett-Packard, Evian, ESPN Sports, United Overseas Bank and Female Brides magazine, Michel is a serious contender for the prize 🙂

To know more about Michel and see his other work, do check out his website and Facebook page.

Aren’t you curious to see Michel’s interpretation of Eve in the Garden of Eden?

Then do check out our Facebook page on 8 Oct when we will reveal his artistic vision for Noël Caleb.

And remember, to make him win, all you have to do is vote for him 🙂

Tomorrow, we meet our second finalist – Jiayun Zhu.

Another Inspiring Initiative: Noël Caleb Photography Contest 2012

Ever since Noël Caleb was launched last year, we have made a name for ourselves not only through our unique and stylish clothes, but also through various creative endeavors, that have placed us a notch above other local fashion labels.

Continuing with this tradition, we have announced another inspiring initiative while we diligently create another jaw-dropping collection 🙂

The Noël Caleb Photography Contest 2012 is our quest to find Asia’s next big fashion photographer.

From numerous entries, we have shortlisted four upcoming, talented photographers who have already done significant work in Singapore and abroad. This week, we will showcase one photographer every day on our blog.

But what will the shortlisted photographers do to be crowned Asia’s Next Big Fashion Photographer?

Let’s find out!

Each photographer will select outfits from our latest collection ‘Garden of Eden’ and create an editorial shoot around the outfits. Here’s a peek at the collection:

Each photographer will unveil their interpretation of Eve, the First Lady of Garden of Eden and how she will look in the modern world. Sounds fascinating, isn’t it?

We will reveal their artistic spreads on our Facebook page on 8 October. And that’s when you all come into the picture 🙂

You will have one week  to vote for your favorite photographer!

Your vote has 60% weightage in the final decision so each vote will be really important to our photographers.

The final winner will get to create an editorial fashion spread for Noël Caleb in our next campaign. It will be our small contribution to showcase Asian talent on a global stage.

So be sure to check out our blog every day to know about the aspiring photographers.

Tomorrow we meet Michel Tay, and you’ll get to know more about him!

Noël Caleb Associate Programme: Field Trip!!!

Can you sense the excitement?

The first field trip for the participants of the Noël Caleb Associate Programme!

A fabric sourcing trip!

Needless to say, everyone involved was super thrilled 🙂

So bright and early, one Saturday morning, our participants set out to buy fabric for their designs.

Our fabric trader’s workshop cum warehouse was ginormous! Heaps and piles of gorgeous fabric lay all around.

Our participants were quite distracted by this bounty and wanted to pick all 🙂

But finally, they focused on the (secret) theme and decided to choose accordingly.

The participants went through fabric swatches to pick out the fabric they wanted.

Just like pros!

And finally, we can reveal to you one of the secret participants of the Noël Caleb Associate Programme. Chris (L) is not only the only male participant but also the official photographer for the Programme. Don’t you just love his pictures?

For corporate and personal photoshoots, you can contact Chris at email

All our participants were really happy and excited with their choices at the end of the trip. They couldn’t wait to see their designs in their chosen fabrics.

But more about that in our next post.

Noël Caleb Associate Programme: Pattern making session

Hello Friends!

Hope you all had a fantastic Hari Raya weekend. We did 🙂

And now it’s time to catch up with the gorgeous participants of the Noël Caleb Associate Programme. A first-of-its-kind collaboration in Singapore, it brings together people from different backgrounds to create an upcoming collection for our label.

As you know, in the last session, our participants showed their sketches for the collection. Seven designs from each participant were finally selected in accordance with our philosophy of creating a seven-day look.

Moving forward, in this session, our participants finally met with Audrey, our pattern-maker, who will transform their sketches into actual patterns from which the garments will finally be created.

All the participants explained the intricacies of their designs to Audrey, who gave her opinion on what would be feasible, depending on the kind of fabric.

The participants also gave exact measurements of their sketches to Audrey…

…by using other pieces as examples…

…or by giving their own measurements.

In the mean time, Audrey took copious notes.

All in all, it was an intense yet fulfilling session as finally, our participants could see their dreams turning into reality.

Once again, we would like to thank Christopher Oon for the fabulous pictures. For corporate and personal photoshoots, you can contact Christopher at email

In the next session, the participants will go on a field trip to source fabric for their designs.

Stay tuned to find out what happens 🙂

Noël Caleb Associate Programme: Update

Hello Friends!

It’s Magical Monday and that means it’s time to update you all on the first ever Noël Caleb Associate Programme.

As we told you last time, the Noël Caleb Associate Programme, also the first-of-its-kind in Singapore, brings together people from different backgrounds to create an upcoming collection for the label. Last time, you saw how our lovely participants created beautiful mood boards for the collection on the basis of the (secret) theme.

So what are they up to now? Let’s find out 🙂

So in this session, all the participants showed sketches of the designs they had created on the basis of the theme, the mood boards and certain (secret) guidelines from our side.

They also explained the thought behind the designs and the nitty-gritties of how exactly a piece would look.

Each participant could create as many designs as they liked. Seven designs of each participant were eventually selected in accordance with our philosophy of creating a seven-day look for the collection.

As testimony to their different backgrounds, some participants created sketches in pencil while others used water colors.

As usual, there was a lot of discussions, debates …

…referencing, checking…

…and most importantly, great fun we all had.

In the next session, our participants will meet with the pattern-maker, taking another step towards their dream of designing a collection.

Once again, we would like to thank Christopher Oon for the amazing pictures. For corporate and personal photoshoots, you can contact Christopher at email
